STEPHEN A. SCHENDEL, M.D., D.D.S.
Dr. Schendel is Professor of Surgery Emeritus at Stanford University Medical Center and Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital. He was President of the American Society of Maxillofacial Surgeons and a board member of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons from 1992 to 2002. He was Chief of Plastic Surgery at Stanford University Medical Center and Chief of Pediatric Surgery, and Chairman of the Department of Functional Restoration from 1994 to 2001. He was Director of The Craniofacial Anomalies Center at Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital from 1994-2007.
| Dr.Schendel was on the full-time faculty of the Division of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery at Stanford University Medical School from 1989 until 2007. He has published over 100 articles and chapters including a textbook on maxillofacial surgery. |
Dr. Schendel graduated from the University of Minnesota Dental School in 1973. Following this, he completed a four-year residency in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at Southwestern Medical School, Parkland Memorial Hospital in Dallas, Texas. From 1979 to 1980 he studied in France as a Fulbright Fellow at the University of Nantes. The emphasis of this study was cleft lip & palate surgery and dentofacial orthopedics, both under the tutelage of Dr. Jean Delaire. Dr. Schendel then graduated from the University of Hawaii Medical School in 1983 and completed a General Surgery internship at Baylor University Medical Center, Dallas, Texas. He completed an additional two years of General Surgery training at Stanford University Medical Center, followed by completion of the Plastic Surgery training program at Stanford. He spent 1987 to 1988 as an assistant to Dr. Paul Tessier in Paris, France, and also was recipient of a Chateaubriand French Research Fellowship. Dr.Schendel was on the full-time faculty of the Division of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery at Stanford University Medical School from 1989 until 2007. He has published over 100 articles and chapters including a textbook on maxillofacial surgery.
Dr. Schendel’s surgical interests are craniofacial and maxillofacial surgery, including sleep apnea and orthognathic surgery. He is also a leader in the field of distraction osteogenesis for the correction of facial deformities. He is board-certified in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and Plastic Surgery, and is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons and a Fellow in the American Academy of Pediatrics. |
